Paralyzed after diving in an under-filled pool 254

A Central Texas jury awarded $6.2 million to a man who was paralyzed after diving into an under-filled pool at an apartment complex after a 2005 party. The jury determined the owner of Longhorn Landing Apartments was 51 percent liable for the accident for failing to warn swimmers about the water level or closing the pool. A Georgia jury has awarded a local woman $1.2 million in a lawsuit filed against QuikTrip convenience stores after she burned her hand on one of the convenience store’s cappuccino machines in 2007. The woman claimed she was using the machine when 190-degree water shot out of it, scalding her hand. iPhone 4 users have filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple that claims the glass casing on the phones crack much easier than advertised. The glass is supposed to be “super-durable and scratch-resistant,” Apple claims, but in reality the casing is very fragile, the lawsuit states. Recent data shows the “latest model of the iPhone broke 82 percent more often than the iPhone 3GS,” the Washington Post reports. A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against four young men who allegedly stabbed a San Diego college student to death in 2008. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 37,000 infant teethers/rattles due to small pieces on the product that can pose a choking risk. The product’s importer, Sassy Inc., said “small pieces of the plastic ball can detach as a result of children chewing on the teether/rattle, posing an ingestion hazard.” The company has received one report of a piece detaching while being chewed by a child, but no injuries occurred.
